NATIONAL APPRENTICESHIP WEEK
This week its National Apprenticeship Week and we have lots of exciting activities happening in school to celebrate. The theme for the week is ‘build the future’; reflecting on how apprenticeships can help individuals to develop the skills and knowledge required for a rewarding career.
Every year group will benefit from learning about what apprenticeships are, how they link to their subjects in school and how they can make applications in Year 11. We’re also hosting a Careers Fair on Friday 11th February for KS4 where our students will make connections with local colleges, employers, training providers and universities.
By helping students with decisions at crucial stages of their education, informing them of all of their options and introducing them to the world of work, we aim to prepare them for whichever pathway they choose. The activities this week are a perfect opportunity for your child to learn and develop the skills to navigate further education, higher education and employment when they leave Meols Cop High School.
Below is a letter for parents / careers prepared by Alex Burghart, Minister for Skills. In his letter Alex explains how important apprenticeships are for young people and provides a useful link to help your child find an apprenticeship. You will also find a useful parent / carer guide attached I hope you find useful.
If you have any questions or would like to discuss apprenticeships in more detail, please don’t hesitate to contact Ms Paxton on careers@meolscop.co.uk

JUMP THE CREATIVE!
The government has recently launched 'Get The Jump' Skills for Life Campaign, bringing together all educational and training choices for young people in one place. This campaign brings together information about all the choices that are available to young people at post-16 and post-18 to help them make an informed decision about their next step and choose the path that is right for them.
The campaign covers all education and training options but will specifically spotlight technical education routes, which have lower levels of awareness:

Year 10 Work Experience
In today's Year 10 assembly, pupils were informed about their work experience opportunities, which will take place between 4th - 8th July 2022. Joanne Huddart, Head of Employability at Elevate, joined the virtual assembly and spoke about why students should complete their work experience placement - highlighting the importance of coming out of comfort zones and how this can really benefit students.
In November, students were asked to complete a future skills questionnaire and below are the statistics taken from the results:
67% said they hadn’t made contact with people who work in jobs that interest them
72% said they know how to make a good impression when applying for a course or job
But – 54% said they don’t feel confident talking about their skills in an interview
With this in mind, Joanne reminded students that every day at school, with the help of the ASPIRE values, students are being prepared for the journey into the world of work - and by completing their work experience placement, will boost their confidence and give them that head start!

Year 11 Mock Interview Day - Friday 22nd October
There has never been a time when preparation for the world of work has been as important for young people as it is today. The landscape of opportunities, employer expectations and post 16 choices that our students have to navigate is more complex and challenging than that faced by previous generations. Your son / daughter has been working hard to create their first CV during the last few weeks in school.
Following on from this they will be taking part in a “Build Your Future” day on Friday 22nd October. The day will run from 915-310pm and will include, mock interviews with employers, team building tasks, personal brand preparation and completion of college applications.
This is not a non-uniform day but students are welcome to attend in smart business wear or their full school uniform. PE kits are not permitted. Employers will be giving feedback to your son / daughter on their presentation as part of the mock interview process. Employers will be accompanied by Meols Cop staff members throughout the day.
This is an excellent opportunity for our Year 11s to build the skills, resilience and necessary values needed for the world of work
