Subject Leader for English TLR1b

Required for January 2020

This is a great opportunity to join our successful and inclusive school where your workload, wellbeing and professional development really do matter to us.

Our English department consists of 12 dedicated teachers and one specialist teaching assistant. Our team includes the school SENDCO and Assistant SENDCO. The successful applicant will also be assisted by a 2nd in English. We currently study a range of themes at KS3 and are developing a skills based curriculum to effectively prepare students for the challenges of KS4. We are working to embed enrichment texts at KS3 to allow for greater success at GCSE. Our KS4 students study the EDUQAS qualification in English Language and English Literature and currently all students sit their exams at the end of Y11.  The texts we currently study at GCSE include Macbeth, A Christmas Carol and An Inspector Calls. Texts we will study from September onwards at KS3 include Oliver Twist, The Tempest, and The Curious Incident of the Dog in Night time and Of Mice and Men.

Our department also has a well-resourced and popular library, which is managed by our school librarian. We offer a range of revision opportunities for our KS4 students and the library offers a wide range of extracurricular opportunities for KS3 students (inclusive of national writing competitions). Staff members frequently run trips to see theatre performances and we are excited about the prospect of increasing our enrichment opportunities next year. Our students are at the absolute heart of what we do in English and we aspire to create opportunities to develop their love of English, whilst ensuring their attainment and progression prepares them for the wider world.

Our inclusive vision encompasses all in our community, not just our students and we have developed a very special collaborative approach to CPD that new colleagues will be welcomed into so that they quickly become a member of interesting and innovative development groups outside of their subject specialism and department.
