Design & Technology

Design and Technology is an inspiring and creative subject that combines high quality practical skills with detailed subject knowledge from disciplines such as mathematics, science, engineering, computing and art.

Pupils will design and make products that solve real and relevant problems with in variety of contexts and scenarios.

In all specialist areas, the design and production of excellent products is paramount to the work that is completed in Meols Cop High School; this can range from the presentation of a food product, to the level of finish required on a porotype in Resistant Materials or the accuracy of completing a french seam in Textiles.

Our aim in Design and Technology, is to develop students’ design skills, innovative ideas and application of technical and scientific knowledge to design and manufacture an end product that meets both a Design Brief and the needs of a variety of end users.


Key Stage 3 Design and Technology

All students have the opportunity to experience the specialist areas of Resistant Materials, Textiles and Food Technology in Year 7 and Year 8 and are challenged with a variety of tasks that will support them in establishing knowledge and skills that will prepare them if they decide to take the subject further at GCSE.


Key Stage 4 Design and Technology

At GCSE, as a department we offer GCSE Design and Technology, focussing on either Resistant Materials or Textiles and GCSE Food Preparation and Nutrition.


GCSE Design Technology             

Throughout the three year course, students will follow a learning programme that fully equips them with both theory of their chosen specialism and the broader spectrum of Design and Technology knowledge alongside the practical skills and outcomes required for successful completion of the AQA specification.

Creativity and originality are crucial for any student undertaking GCSE Design and Technology; therefore high quality design skill, techniques and practical approaches are taught to enable students to demonstrate these fundamental qualities in their GCSE.


GCSE Food Preparation and Nutrition

Throughout the three year course, students will develop their knowledge, understanding and skills required to prepare a variety of meals that apply the principles of food science, nutrition and healthy eating. Alongside the practical elements, students will follow a rigorous programme of theory that promotes the scientific and knowledge and understanding required for the GCSE specification.

Independence and organisation is crucial for any student undertaking GCSE Food Preparation and Nutrition; students need to be able to make the connections between scientific theory and practice to complete successful outcomes that demonstrate their understanding of food science.
