Department: French
Resources: We have three well qualified and experienced French teachers teaching in refurbished classrooms all of which have interactive whiteboards. We have access to a native speaking teaching assistant who offer in-class support in some KS3 and KS4 lessons. Every student is provided with a textbook and their own workbook which are used in class.
Curriculum KS3: Our students are set so that they can progress at the correct rate for their ability. We follow the National Curriculum in years 7 and 8 and aim to build up our students’ skills, knowledge and understanding. National Curriculum levels are assessed via modular tests, and students are asked to take an active part in reviewing their own progress. Homework packs are sent home for completion on a twice-yearly basis and are designed to enrich the language learning experience.
Students in year 9 study the AQA FCSE French course. This is an examination where students are awarded pass (level 4), merit (level 5) or distinction (level 6). Students sit listening and reading exams and complete 3 short pieces of coursework. Speaking skills are tested, recorded and moderated by AQA. The topics studied for the examination rotate every three years and include such things as: Meeting People; Home Life; Education; Holidays; Travel and Accommodation; Leisure; Celebrations and Health and Fitness.
Curriculum KS4: (see options page for more detailed information) We begin the AQA GCSE course in year 10 which builds on prior skills and knowledge. The course includes the following topics:- Lifestyle, Leisure, Home and Environment, and Work and Education.
Enrichment: The school frequently offers educational holidays in France (usually Paris) and these visits bring the language alive to many of our students. Older students are offered after school support and holiday revision sessions so that they can attain their full potential.
