Department: Mathematics
Resources: We have 6 specialist mathematicians and a dedicated suite of mathematics classrooms, all with interactive whiteboards and one with our own ICT suite. Our middle/higher ability students are supported by a graduate teaching assistant and we are also supported by teaching assistants when we teach students with special educational needs. Every student has a homework practice book, a personal password to access MyMaths resources, for school and home use, and all examination students are provided with a CD rom for home revision
Curriculum KS3: Our students are set on entry and setting is reviewed regularly. Our termly progress reports, allow us to track progress and personalised intervention supports students who have found it difficult to reach their learning target. We follow the National Curriculum in years 7 and 8 and preparation for Functional Skills begins with a project week in year 7.
Curriculum KS4: (See options page for further details) Our students begin their Edexcel examination course in year 9 and we study a modular GCSE course, which we feel best suits our students’ learning styles. We have 2 tiers of entry, Higher [grades A*-D] and Foundation [grades C-G] to ensure that our young mathematicians are challenged sufficiently and are prepared for college, employment and university.
Enrichment: To motivate, challenge and reward our students, we have many enrichment activities. Monthly maths competitions are held, every correct entry receiving a certificate. A team of year 7 students enter the Sefton Mathematics Challenge each year.
Older students are offered after school support and holiday revision sessions. Visits to the CLC allow students to be involved with international mathematics dialogue, broadening mathematical horizons and focusing key thinking skills.
