Department: Religious Education
Resources: We have two specialist R.E teachers and a dedicated R.E classroom, with an interactive whiteboard. Our lessons are supported by learning support assistants when we teach students with special educational needs.
Curriculum Key Stage 3: Students follow a programme of study in line with the Sefton agreed syllabus. This programme includes study of 5 of the major world religions; Christianity, Islam, Buddhism, Judaism and Sikhism. In year 7 students enjoy a thematic approach to studying religions and are given the freedom to explore world culture and beliefs through role play, interactive material, group work, designing creative places of worship and menus suitable for different religious believers. Students in year 8 are equipped with the skills not only to understand other people’s beliefs, values and cultures, but can use group work and debate to create considerate and respectful outlooks.
The R.E department also places emphasis on the student’s own spiritual development by encouraging personal reflection, empathy and an evaluation of their own beliefs, values and opinions.
Curriculum Key Stage 4: (See options page for more detailed information) The compulsory G.C.S.E begins in year 9; we follow the WJEC exam board, specification B. The current change in curriculum means that all students are taking eight units of study across three years. Students are entered for two examinations, one at the end of year 10 and the other at the end of year 11.
Enrichment: To motivate, challenge and reward our students, we have several enrichment activities and rewards. We offer postcards home, certificates and draws for prizes and study packs. React, an arts based RE club, offers periodic opportunities to bring R.E alive. Older students are offered after school support and holiday revision sessions in an enjoyable and dynamic environment.
