Department: Physical Education Resources: We have 5 specialist Physical Education teachers. The department is well resourced with two gymnasiums, a sports field, three outdoor basketball courts, two netball courts and two tennis courts. There is an ICT area which is used to enhance the learning of our students. An extensive range of equipment is used to teach a variety of activities. Curriculum KS3: Our students are set on entry and setting is reviewed regularly. We assess and track the progress of our students, and provide individual learning strategies to allow them to achieve their targets. In year 7 and 8 they will take on different roles in sport including being a coach, analysing performances and developing physical and mental skills for use in competition or performance. Curriculum KS4: (See options page for more detailed information.) In year 9 our students start their Edexcel BTEC First for Sport Certificate. They receive four hours of lessons each week and can achieve pass, merit or distinction. In years 10 and 11 students may choose to extend their qualifications by following the BTEC First for Sport Diploma, BTEC Dance, or GCSE Physical Education. Students who do not follow an exam course continue with core Physical Education lessons, which provide the students with opportunities to include physical activity in their weekly routine. Enrichment: Physical Education provides many enrichment activities. There are breakfast and lunchtime clubs, and daily after school clubs. These change each half term and are advertised in the weekly bulletin. As part of the curriculum students can obtain a level 1 Sports Leadership Award or a Dance Leaders Award. Students use leadership skills by working with primary students, during coaching, festivals, inter primary school competitions and sports days. Students can participate in a variety of lunchtime and after school sports clubs, leading to public performances or local and national competitions. Links with local sports clubs and facilities are explored in PE enrichment lessons, and students looking for further challenges in their chosen sport are supported with introductions to help them extend their level of participation in sport.
