Department: Music Resources: We have 2 specialist music teachers and 4 specialist peripatetic instrumental teachers who come in to teach woodwind, brass, strings and guitar. We have 2 teaching rooms and 3 practice rooms off the main teaching area. The second teaching room is an ICT suite with 17 networked computers with midi keyboards using software such as Sibelius 5, Cubase studio 5 and Dance Ejay. We also have a range of instruments as well as samba and African drums. Both teaching rooms have interactive whiteboards. We are also supported by teaching assistants when we teach students with special educational needs. Curriculum KS3: We follow the National Curriculum for Music in years 7, 8 & 9 and differentiate to suite all abilities so that all students enjoy music. They develop an appreciation and understanding of music through listening, appraising, composing and performing. All students are given the opportunity to learn a musical instrument and instrumental lessons are FREE. Curriculum KS4: (See options page for more detailed information.) Our students choose to take music at the end of year 9 and follow the Edexcel GCSE examination course in years 10 & 11. Students must be able to play a musical instrument or use their voice as an instrument. The coursework consists of 60% of their final grade and the final written examination is 40%. The coursework must have a solo performance piece, an ensemble performance piece and two compositions. We take students on trips to experience live music and shows. This helps students with their compositions and topics such as musicals. We have live workshops such as African drumming for students to gain added expertise. Enrichment: We have gained Arts Mark Gold status due to all the extra curricular activities our students take part in throughout all the arts departments. In music we have developed an excellent reputation in our local community with our choir in public performances at the Rotary Club, Southport Festival, Tesco’s and 3 residential homes. We have a school band, a flute group and a music theory group. We offer vocal coaching for students in the shows we put on in school. Our school band and choir perform at our Rewards Evening, talent show, summer show, Christmas show (with the RE dept) and the school show we put on each year.
