Department: English Resources: We have 6 specialist English teachers and a dedicated suite of English classrooms, all with interactive whiteboards. Our students are supported by a graduate teaching assistant. We are also supported by teaching assistants when we teach students with special educational needs or English as an additional language. Curriculum KS3: Our students are set on entry and setting is reviewed regularly. We track students’ progress in Year 7 and 8 through ongoing assessments in reading, writing, and speaking and listening. Each student builds an English progress file which allows us to provide personalised intervention, and to support students in achieving their learning targets. We can also provide specific intervention for SEN and EAL students. Homework is project based and set on a half termly basis. Curriculum KS4: (See options page for more detailed information) Our students begin their WJEC examination courses in year 9. We aim to complete 4 pieces of coursework for the Language component of the GCSE by the end of this year. We also study English Literature in years 10 and 11. We have 2 tiers of entry, Higher [grades A*-E] and Foundation [grades C-G]. We analyse students’ progress and aptitude carefully to decide on the best entry tier for each individual. We feel this course prepares the students well for their chosen pathway to further education or employment. Enrichment: We aim to motivate and inspire our students beyond the classroom. We regularly arrange performances, both in school and locally, to enhance our students’ cultural awareness. Inspirational authors often visit school to promote their books and encourage reading. We also emphasise the importance of public speaking, participating in local events and running primary competitions. We encourage students to enter their writing, particularly poetry, for inclusion in national and local anthologies.
