Resources

Welcome to the Art Department. We offer an innovative Art curriculum including: Drawing, Painting, Ceramics, Print making, Three Dimensional Design, Textile Art, Graphics and ICT. All of our Art staff have specialist skills to offer in a variety of areas. We teach across the whole age and ability range. There are two specialised, multifunctional Art learning rooms at Meols Cop. It is our mission to engage all pupils by providing a broad and balanced curriculum, to increase their aesthetic awareness, to ensure all of their individual learning needs are met, to increase their knowledge of artists, designers & crafts people, to provide a stimulating environment in which to learn, and to prepare pupils for further education or careers in the field of Art and Design.

Key Stage 3

Our scheme of work provides a structure for students' learning and all programmes of study are structured to allow for progression. Theme based projects are delivered throughout the department, ensuring that every student has the opportunity to experience a wide variety of art techniques and cultures, and are able to experiment with a range of materials.

Each pupil experiences a broad and varied curriculum and Art work is produced in both two and three dimensions. Basic principles and theories are integrated through practice and work is displayed to develop pupils' self confidence. Learners are regularly encouraged to observe and discuss their own, and the work of others, building self esteem and analytical skills.

Key Stage 4

(See options page for further details) Students follow the Art & Design (unendorsed) AQA syllabus, which combines Drawing, Painting, Printmaking and Textiles. Coursework makes up 60% of the total mark, while the exam (controlled test) is worth 40%.

Enrichment

All pupils are provided with a sketchbook, which they are encouraged to use to develop their own ideas. In Years 7, 8, and 9, home learning is completed twice a year, in line with the school home learning rota. Year 10 and Year 11 learners complete several home learning tasks throughout each coursework project and are expected to regularly take work home to complete and to further develop.

There are KS3 and GCSE Art Clubs which run daily at lunch time and after school to which, all our Artists are welcome and encouraged to attend.

Work created by GCSE Artists is displayed at our annual Art public exhibition at the Wayfarers Shopping Arcade, on Lord Street in Southport, for two weeks in September and is a celebration of their achievements over two years.

We also engage our Artists further through our GCSE Art workshops at Southport College.

We are proud to announce that last year all of our 31 GCSE students achieved an incredible 100% A-C grades, with 14 of those gaining either grade A or A*. Many of these students have since gone on to take up a course of study in Art at Further or Higher Education Colleges.
